An ode to Fred!

Dear Reader,

I’m going to let you in on a little secret, I’m a HUGE Mr. Rogers fan. Not only did I watch his show growing up during my limited TV time (thanks mom!), but I now watch old episodes with my preschool-aged sons. Nowadays, we also kick back and watch Daniel Tiger, a cartoon inspired by Mr. Rogers with positive messages on empathy, kindness, and tolerance.

In addition to reading countless articles on this inspirational, humble man, I recently enjoyed the 2019 movie A Beautiful Neighborhood starring Tom Hanks, which delved into how Rogers helped a struggling news reporter piece his life together.

I chose to write about Fred Rogers because his message remains timeless, and these days, we could all use a reminder about the importance of neighbors.

“About two-thirds of Americans who know at least some of their neighbors (66%) would feel comfortable asking to leave a set of keys with them for emergencies.” Pew Research

And, I must admit that as an adult, I still turn to Mr. Roger’s words of wisdom to get me through tough times.

Although I could take up hours of your time, I know you have lives, so I’d like to share just three of Mr. Rogers’ quotes.

Fun fact that relates, I swear: When bloggers write an article with a list of quotes and explanations, it’s called a quotesicle. (I love that word!)

But usually, quotesicle writers describe each quote in depth.

Yet, I am choosing to let these three Mr. Rogers quotes stand alone — not only for the sake of time — but because these words don’t need any further explanation.

Isn’t it powerful that quotes said on a children’s TV show years ago still resonate with adults?

I encourage you to read each one slowly, then reflect on its meaning and how the quote affects your own life, because no matter where you are on your personal journey, we can all learn a little something from Fred.
