How Writing Changed Me as a Person

These writing lessons are life lessons, too.

Author James Baldwin once said, “You write in order to change the world, knowing perfectly well that you probably can’t, but also knowing that literature is indispensable to the world.”

I agree, but I believe there’s a second part missing: You also write to improve yourself.

After freelance writing for the last three years, I’ve discovered this occupation is so much more than a way to bring home the bacon. Writing exposes vulnerabilities in a way other careers can’t, and it has helped me grow and learn more about myself than I ever thought possible.

Here’s how writing changed me as a person.

Freelance writing taught me how to set (firmer) boundaries.

When I first began writing for others, boundaries were a weakness. Want five drafts? Sure?

Need me to add pictures? No problem?

A sixth phone call to discuss potential topics. Why not?
