Perceptions of Strawberry Shortcake

Our perceptions are ours and ours alone.

“The best part is the strawberries,”
my sweet son said as he pointed to his strawberry shortcake,
while sporting a
smeared Cool Whip smile.

“Really?” I said,
“because my favorite part is the biscuit.”

My son paused, one eyebrow raised,
and I could tell he hadn’t thought
— unintentionally, of course —
that his only perspective had been his own.

This short exchange
created a massive amount of dots
in my brain,

like light ricocheting between connecting
stars.

And I thought,
how interesting that each perspective was
equally valid because
both perspectives were, in fact, “true”.

My experience of strawberry shortcake,
according to my own perception and experience,
was enjoying biscuits the most.
